Sumerian legend Sumerian of Oannes – Sumerian religion had alien gods
Religion consisted of a conceptual and operative solution to the luminous experience that attracted and frightened the individual. To the different gods the Sumerians attributed specific forms (not necessarily anthropomorphic), which coincided with the fundamental principles of existence, in an attempt to bring these gods closer to everyday life. The principle of good (protection) and evil (deception) were identified in the luminous one. The forms attributed to the gods referred to the typical activities of the different places, destined to assure the survival.
In general, in the striking Sumerian pantheon -composed of almost 4,000 gods, of different degrees, nature and function- only a small number of them occupied a relevant position and this was due to the acceptance of the whole people or to the high consideration that a certain number received in a territory or in a city. In this crowded “Olympus”, taking the premises, I can affirm that the divinities carried out the task of transmitting to the creatures all kinds of knowledge, allowing the evolution of the growing levels of civilization.
One of the figures that has always aroused the interest of my ancient studies is the god Oannes, halfway between man and amphibian who, participating in the terrestrial and marine nature, equated the most ancestral passions that stirred the subjective spirit. What has constantly surprised me is that while modern science almost agrees in reconnecting the origin of man with the evolution of a bacterium originating from an aquatic environment, it seems that the distant Sumerians were already clear about this discovery that dismays us a little.
Thanks to his dual marine and terrestrial nature, Oannes was entrusted with the task of transmitting the letters, art, science and technology: in a peculiar way, he taught the rules of agriculture, a manifestation of the human ability achieved to force production cycles from the ground and to take advantage of water sources, that is, to dominate the two primordial forces of life.
So far, the “personal data” of the god, which may not even arouse great interest, although the gods in possession of a similar “personal card” represent all successive derivations of Oannes. What can lead to a deeper understanding of the character are attempts to give him a more precise connotation, resulting in a series of theories that have overlapped over the centuries.
The mysterious etymology of the name induced some scholars to make a bold connection by assonance between Oannes and Johannes (John) Baptist, that is, with the evangelical figure who, by immersion in the baptismal water, announced the beginning of a new phase of man’s condition; other experts assimilated him to Jaoanas (Jonah), swallowed by the whale.
In the palace of Sargon II in Iraq, representations of the Syrian Oannes dating from 721 to 705 B.C. have been found, while many chroniclers of the Hellenic period speak of the Sumerian Oannes as originating from the waves of the Persian Gulf. The priest of Bel, Berosso, in his monumental work History of Babylon, composed around 275 B.C., reconnects his generation with the Eritrean Sea.
However, in the Florentine Romanesque abbey of San Miniato al Monte, in the tympanum of the façade and under the license of the cross, I had the opportunity to notice the presence of some figures that easily go back to what we are talking about. This should not sound unusual, since even in Christian theological culture one speaks of semi-divine beings entrusted with the function of transmitting knowledge to men.
he events have not changed direction in the times in which we live. From the myth of the “manfish” derived from the god Nommo, the amphibian descended from the sky adored by the Dogons of Mali to the thesis raised at the beginning of 1800 which, misinterpreting the words of Berosso, saw in Oannes one of the ten celestial mediators descending directly to the earth from the “cosmic egg”. However, the theory, so to speak “synthetic” and spread over a few decades, is gaining considerable success because it is linked to UFO sightings and is related to the study of stars in the early Mesopotamian civilizations.
Oannes may actually have been an extraterrestrial being. Through a kind of comparative anthropological studies on the oldest cultures, elevating mythological data to historical data, we can safely conclude that our gods of the past were actually visitors from other planets with a very advanced technology.
The idea that the very conception of human evolution must be completely rewritten, since both the Darwinian and biblical visions must be assumed with careful and critical consideration.
Today we have an extremely limited knowledge of man’s path throughout history, from his appearance to the present day; and archaeological discoveries suggest the possibility that other advanced civilizations have previously alternated on our planet, have reached a high degree of development (perhaps higher than the present) and have fallen by some planetary catastrophe or have unleashed uncontrollable self-destruction.
